The name of Tinghir or Tinerhir
Often transcribed to the Latin alphabet as Tinerhir,
sometimes as Tineghir, Tinehir or also Tinergir, the name Tinghir
is clearly Berber and seems composed by words TI + N + IGHIR or TIN + IGHIR.

The ksar Tinghir |
The current opinion in Tinghir is that the name of the town comes
from the Berber words TI (that) + the proposal N’ (of) + IGHIR (hill), giving the whole "That of te Hill". But we must note that in
ancient Berber language the word TIN means "well" and is found very often in toponymy of the region: Tin Missao, Tin Tarabine, Tindouf
and even the famous Timbuktu (in Tuareg Tin Bouctou) are good examples. So Tinghir could also derive from TIN + IGHIR, "Hill Well".
